Dr Neville J Rowden

Overview

I graduated in Orthopaedic surgery in Sydney in 1985 and have been established in private
practice since then.

From 1988 – 2000 I was a visiting medical officer at the Prince of Wales Hospital, Randwick, acting as Head of the Department of Traumatic & Orthopaedic Surgery between 1993 - 1995.

In 1994 I won the Evelyn Hamilton Trust Award for the best scientific paper at the Australian Orthopaedic Association Meeting (Comparisons of Fixed Strengths of Two Types of Autologous ACL Grafts) and during the same year represented the Australian Orthopaedic Association as an exchange fellow in Hong Kong.

For the past ten tears I have subspecialised in knee surgery and since 1998 much of my practice has focused on overall management of osteoarthritis of the knee. I have developed a strong interest in unicompartmental arthroplasty surgery and visited Dr J Repicci in Buffalo, New York and Dr Gerald Engh at the Anderson Clinic in Washington. USA.

In 2003 I founded the Hurstville Knee Clinic and have established a knee arthroplasty data base with prospective outcome measurements including patient demographics, Oxford knee scores (OKS) and x-rays. This data base has been running since 1998 and now comprises over 1500 patients.

I have a keen interest in using the OKS for outcome assessment of knee surgery and as a tool for patient education and surgical decision making.

I am currently involved in research into many aspects of unicompartmental arthroplasty including indications, contra-indications and long term results.

I am currently Chairman to the Medical Council of Calvary Hurstville Community Hospital.
